Kamal Hassan, who launched his political party Makkal Needhi Maiam on Wednesday, has acted in films with political themes or making a social commentary. Here are four of them:

 
1) Hey Ram!: He plays the role of a would-be assassin of Mahatma Gandhi who changes his mind and decides to live a life of peace. 
 
2) Varumain niram sigappu (The colour of poverty is red): Plays the role of an educated, unemployed youth who spouts the poetry of Bharatiyar (Subramania Bharati). Unable to find a job that will let him live by what his conscience dictates, he finally becomes a barber.
 
3) Anbe Sivam: Touches on the communism, atheism, secularism, and on being a humanist.
 
4) Unnal Mudiyum Thambi: Addresses casteism. Plays the role of the son of an orthodox Carnatic musician. In conflict with his father's views, the son works for social change.
