Aam Aadmi Party national convener Arvind Kejriwal Tuesday resigned as Delhi chief minister, even as the party supported Atishi to take over that position.

Kejriwal, facing corruption allegations in an excise policy case, was granted bail by the Supreme Court last week. His colleague, deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia too came out on bail in the same case recently. The court, however, had placed conditions on Kejriwal’s functioning as chief minister.

That prompted him to declare on Sunday that he would resign from the post within two days and seek people’s mandate again. Accordingly, he met Delhi lieutenant governor V. K. Saxena Tuesday evening and tendered his resignation.

Meanwhile, in a party meeting on Tuesday, Atishi was chosen to hold that position. Atishi, accompnied by Kejriwal, met Saxena and presented a letter of support for her from the party MLAs.

The term of the Delhi assembly expires in February. Kejriwal is expected to go for an early election, which could be advantageous to him as he is on bail. His repeated refrain has been that the rival BJP has been trying to frame him but he is innocent and he would like the people of Delhi to decide on the issue.
