The BJP-Shiv Sena Mahayuti has won the Maharashtra assembly elections with a comfortable margin, while the Hemant Soren-led Jharkhand Mukti Morcha has emerged clearly victorious in Jharkhand.

While the counting was nearing the end Saturday evening, the party position in Maharashtra at 7 pm was:

BJP: 103 won and 30 leading
Shiv Sena: 47 + 10
NCP: 37 + 4

Shiv Sena (UBT): 19 + 1
Congress: 11 + 4
NCP (Pawar): 10 + 0

With this, the BJP has been able to reverse the poor performance in the state during the Lok Sabha elections earlier this year.

This was also the first assembly election after the split in the two leading regional parties of the state, Shiv Sena and NCP. In both cases, the fractions that aligned with the BJP have left the pre-break-up leader behind. Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar will have to rethink their strategy, as they are left with far fewer seats.

In Jharkhand, the BJP failed to counter Soren. The tally at 7 pm was:

JMM: 33 + 1
BJP: 19 + 2
Congress: 15 + 1
RJD: 4 + 0
CPI (ML) (L): 2 + 0
