Narendra Modi made history Sunday evening as he was sworn in by president Droupadi Murmu for a third successive term.

Modi thus becomes the first prime minister since Jawaharlal Nehru to have comptered two full terms and beginning a third consecutive term.

In the swearing-in ceremony held in the forecourt of the Rashtrapati Bhavan, a number of leaders also took oath of office and secrecy. The council of ministers includes Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, Nirmala Sitharaman, S Jaishankar, Ashwini Vaishnaw, Bhupender Yadav, Mansukh Mandviya, Pralhad Joshi and Kiren Rijuju among others, from the previous cabinet. BJP president JP Nadda and former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan also find a place in the new union cabinet.

From the NDA constituents and allies, HD Kumaraswamy, Ramdas Athwale, Chirag Paswan, among others, took oath of office.

The event was attended by vice president Jagdeep Dhankhar, chief justice of India DY Chandrachud, Congress president and leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge. The two new allies of the NDA TDP president Chandrababu Naidu and JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar were also present.

Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina and Maldives president Mohamed Muizzu were among the foreign dignitaries who remained present after a special invitation.
