Rahul to kick off UP campaign

Venue: Nehru’s constituency, date: Nehru’s birth anniversary

GN Bureau | November 11, 2011

Rahul Gandhi is kicking off the Congress poll campaign for the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections from Phulpur in Allahabad district on Monday.

He will hand over the party flag to 12 conveners to spread out from November 19, the birth anniversary of Indira Gandhi, with a fortnight-long mass campaign and public rallies to cover each and every block of the state.

The timing and selection of venue for starting the campaign is significant as November 14 is the birth anniversary of the first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Phulpur is the constituency from which Nehru used to contest the elections.

The constituency is now represented by Kapil Muni Karwariya of the ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and as such the Phulpur rally is seen as the challenge being thrown to its supremo chief minister Mayawati.

The party sources said the massive campaign to be launched from November 19 will not have Rahul Gandhi in UP that day as he has a prior engagement in Delhi.

According to UP Congress chief Rita Bahuguna, the party workers are being mobilised from all over UP to make the rally a big success, though most of those turning up will be from Allahabad and the neighbouring districts.
