Reply sought by Delhi HC on ban of junk food

Based on a PIL filed to ban junk food and carbonated drinks in schools

A division bench of the Delhi high court has on Wednesday issued a notice to the government of Delhi on the basis of a public interest litigation (PIL) to ban junk food and aerated drinks in schools in Delhi. Uday Foundation had filed a PIL in the high court to ban junk food and carbonated drinks in schools and also for banning its sale within a radius of 500 yards of a school.

Chief justice Dipak Misra and justice Manmohan have asked the government of Delhi, union ministry of human resources and development, union ministry of health and family welfare, national commission for protection of child rights and the ministry of education, Delhi to file their reply by February 9, 2011 in the matter.

The high court has also appointed senior counsel Neeraj Kishan Kaul as the amicus curiae in the matter.
