Sahai to expedite mega Food Park Project in northeast

GN Bureau | February 24, 2010

Minister of Food Processing Industries Subodh Kant Sahai has met officials of the special purpose vehicle (SPV) of the North East Mega Food Park, which is setting up the Mega Food Park at Nalbari in Assam, and took stock of the progress of the project during his visit to the region.

The Mega Food Park in Assam with an investment of around Rs.76 crore will be an achievement for the state as this would help transform agriculture by fostering value addition and provide the thrust for the shift of conventional farming practices into a market driven and clusterised farming, an official release said.

The central government is providing an assistance of Rs.50 crore for this project. It is expected to leverage an investment of about Rs.200-250 crore in the form of food processing units proposed to be set up in the mega food park.

It will also attract a sizeable amount of foreign direct investment, as FDI up to 100 percent is under automatic route for most of the processed food products.

Around 27 processing and ancillary units coming up in this food park will process about 180,000 TPA of raw material, primarily fruits and vegetables, rice and spices, and will create sizeable job opportunities.
