Sonia undergoes surgery in US

UPA, Congress, NAC to remain headless for three weeks

GN Bureau | August 4, 2011

Congress chief Sonia Gandhi has undergone a surgery in the US.

She was not well, and was absent in parliament, but now sources say she  has been in the US and has been operated upon. She is expected to return only in mid-September.

She has entrusted the running of day-to-day affairs of AICC to AK Antony, Rahul Gandhi, Ahmed Patel and Janardhan Diwedi.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday spoke to her and wished speedy recovery.

With her absence, NAC, UPA, Congress Core Committee and a number of trusts and foundations will remain headless for a while as nobody has been named to lead them in her absence.

Gandhi also holds six more top posts, as head of Nehru Memorial, Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, Anand Bhavan and Swaraj Bhavan.

On the political side, the UPA II was to take a call on Telangana and appointment of several governors apart from devising strategies for five state assembly elections, especially in Uttar Pradesh. All that will have to wait.

In the past seven years, Gandhi positioned herself in such a way that nothing moved without her nod. The real heat will now be felt by the prime minister in particular.
