Water cuts to continue as of now, says BMC

Water cuts to continue even though all the six lakes have received good rainfall since June 1

The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) today said the ongoing water cuts in the city would continue as of now even though all the six lakes have received good rainfall since June 1.

"Monsoon has arrived. All the six lakes have received rainfall since June 1. Last year during the same period there was zero rainfall in the lakes. This is definitely a good beginning and good news for Mumbaikar," Municipal Commissioner Swadhin Kshatriya told reporters here.

The Commissioner said since June 1 till today, Modak Sagar received 42 mm of rainfall, Tansa 38 mm, Vihar 59 mm, Tulsi 37 mm, Upper Vaitarna 64 mm and Bhatsa 65 mm of rainfall.

At present, the lakes have a total available stock of 80,366 million litres per day (mld) against 2,20,057 mld last year.

Last year's poor monsoon forced the civic body to cut water supply to residential users by 15 per cent and to commercial establishments by 30 per cent.

Meanwhile, showers continued today with Bhatsa receiving 37.20 mm of rainfall, Modak Sagar 28 mm, Upper Vaitarna 17, Vihar 14, Tansa 11 and Tulsi 8 mm.

"It is good that the lakes are receiving rainfall but every day levels are falling down about by two-three centimeters. We will withdraw the water cuts once the situation improves," Kshatriya added.

With the levels in the lakes depleting, the BMC has stopped drawing water from the Upper Vaitarna Lake, which is close to its lowest drawable level of 595.13 metres. The corporation has also stopped drawing water from Vihar Lake since April 15.

Currently, BMC has implemented 15 per cent water cut for residential area while it is 30 per cent for commercial establishments.

The commissioner also said the evacuation of all the people who are staying in the landslide-prone areas and dilapidated buildings is on.

Meanwhile, following the death of two minor girls were killed and another injured when the wall of a toilet collapsed on June 8, MCGM today said ex-gratia will be given to the families.

"It was an unfortunate incident. The toilet wall was ours?it was constructed by the BMC. We have held discussions with the Collector and soon an ex-gratia will be released," Kshtriya said.
