Water war takes another life

GN Bureau | June 29, 2010

Yet another life has been lost over water. A 22-year-old man was killed in Govind Vihar, northeast Delhi on Sunday in a brawl between neighbours over a water tap that had been sealed by the Jal Board, according to news reports. The incident occurred when two residents of Govind Nagar, Vijender Singh Chowdhury and Vijender Sharma, got into a fight over a common tap that had been sealed by the DJB.

"On Sunday, they got into groups and opened fire at each other. Bhagat Singh died and one Ompal was critically injured," said S S Yadav, deputy commissioner of police (northeast). Singh and Ompal, a relative of Chowdhury's, went to Sharma's house. Sharma called his friends and the groups fought. Someone from Sharma's group fired at Ompal but hit Singh, said an officer. Ironically, Singh had nothing to do with the dispute.

Ompal has been admitted to GTB Hospital and is reported to be in a critical condition.

According to the family, Bhagat Singh's body was dumped at the Karawal Nagar Chowk at 11.30 pm on Sunday.

A similar incident of war over water (see 'Related stories') took place just across Delhi border, in Ghaziabad, a few days ago.  On June 5, Nand Kishore, a 50-year-old labourer was killed near his Sangam Vihar home at Loni in Ghaziabad district. Kishore had tried to shield his daughter Neetu from his neighbours who abused her while she was filling empty cans at a handpump in front of the latter's home.
