The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, addressed Members of both Houses of Parliament in the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan on Wednesday, as the nation celebrated the 11th Samvidhan Divas with great fervour and enthusiasm. Vice-President of India and Chairman, Rajya Sabha, C. P. Radhakrishnan also addressed on the occasion. The event was graced by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi; Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Union Ministers, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge; Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi; Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha, Harivansh and Members of Parliament.

Speaking on the occasion, the President said that in 2015, the year of Baba Saheb Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar's 125th birth anniversary, it was decided to celebrate November 26th annually as Constitution Day. That decision has proven to be really meaningful. On this day, the entire nation reaffirms its respect for our Constitution, the foundation of Indian democracy, and its makers. 'We, the people of India,' express faith in our Constitution, both individually and collectively. Through numerous events, the citizens, especially the youth, are made aware of constitutional ideals. The initiative to start and continue the tradition of celebrating Constitution Day is praiseworthy beyond words.

The President said that the strong arguments given in the Constituent Assembly in favour of adopting the parliamentary system are relevant even today. The Indian Parliament, which expresses public aspirations in the world's largest democracy, today serves as an example for many democracies around the world.

She said that the ideals that express the soul of our Constitution are: social, economic and political justice; liberty, equality, and fraternity. She was happy to note that on all these dimensions, the members of parliament have actualized the visions of the Constitution makers. She said that as a tangible testament to the success of our parliamentary system, today India is rapidly progressing toward becoming the world's third-largest economy. India has achieved one of the world's greatest successes on the scale of economic justice, with nearly 250 million people coming out of poverty.

Delivering Welcome Address, Lok Sabha Speaker Birla noted that India’s Constitution has transformed the nation’s profound diversity of culture, language, traditions and customs into a strong and unified national identity rooted in shared democratic values. The Constitution stands as the heart and soul of the nation, embodying its civilisational wisdom, democratic ethos and collective aspirations, he stressed.

Paying rich tributes to Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Chairman of the Constituent Assembly of India; Babasaheb Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar, the chief architect of the Constitution; and all Members of the Constituent Assembly, Birla emphasised that it was their foresight, wisdom and tireless labour that India gained a visionary Constitution that guarantees justice, equality, fraternity and dignity to every citizen.

As part of the programme, the President Smt. Droupadi Murmu released digitally the translated versions of the Constitution of India in nine Indian languages - Malayalam, Marathi, Nepali, Punjabi, Bodo, Kashmiri, Telugu, Odia and Assamese. She also led the dignitaries in a collective reading of the Preamble to the Constitution, reaffirming the nation’s deep faith in its noble constitutional tenets and its commitment to upholding democratic values.

On the occasion of Constitution Day, Prime Minister Modi paid tribute to the framers of India’s Constitution, acknowledging their vision and foresight that continue to inspire the nation in its collective pursuit of building a Viksit Bharat.

The PM emphasized that the Constitution of India accords the highest importance to human dignity, equality, and liberty. He noted that while the Constitution empowers citizens with rights, it also reminds them of their duties, which must be fulfilled with sincerity and commitment. These duties, he underlined, form the very foundation of a strong and vibrant democracy.

Reiterating the nation’s resolve, Prime Minister Modi called upon citizens to strengthen Constitutional values through their actions, thereby contributing to the progress and unity of the country.

In a post on X, Modi noted:

“On Constitution Day, we pay tribute to the framers of our Constitution. Their vision and foresight continue to motivate us in our pursuit of building a Viksit Bharat.

Our Constitution gives utmost importance to human dignity, equality and liberty. While it empowers us with rights, it also reminds us of our duties as citizens, which we should always try to fulfil. These duties are the foundation of a strong democracy.

Let us reiterate our commitment to strengthening Constitutional values through our actions.”
