Furore in UP assembly over 'humiliation' of SP member

Party member Irfan Solanki alleges mistreatment by senior government official

Pandemonium prevailed in the Uttar Pradesh legislative assembly today leading to adjournment of the house for 50 minutes over the alleged humiliation of a Samajwadi Party member by a senior government official.

All members of SP squatted on the floor at the well of the house to protest the "mistreatment" of their party member Irfan Solanki who claimed that he was humiliated by a senior government official in Kanpur.

Through a question of propriety during the zero hour, Solanki said he was "shown the door" by the senior government official on June 15 when he went to her to discuss the problems faced by weavers.

"Despite my telling her that I am a people's representative, I was shown the door and fake cases were also lodged against me," he claimed, adding that a senior official of the state later branded him a 'goonda'.

When parliamentary affairs minister Lalji Verma said the issue concerned the privileges of the member and should be brought under another rule, all members of SP stood up and protested, claiming that there had been no meeting of the privileges committee of the House for the past four years.

Leader of BJP legislature party Om Prakash Singh also said that without going into the technicalities, the issue should be heard as it concerned the dignity of a member.

As the SP members trooped into the well of the house and squatted on the floor, senior Samajwadi Party member Azam Khan sought assurance from Speaker Sukhdev Rajbhar on government action in this connection.

Former Speaker and SP member Mata Prasad Pandey suggested that the Speaker summon to his chamber the senior official who had termed Solanki a 'goonda'.

The Speaker directed the government to do the needful and apprise the House by August 12, the last day of the ongoing session.

However, there were sharp exchanges when the Speaker expressed his displeasure at SP members not restoring order and creating a scene in the House.

As the Speaker initially adjourned the House for 15 minutes, Khan and Ambika Chaudhary were heard raising objections and trading charges.

The adjournment time was extended for another 35 minutes and order was restored in the House only after assurance that the government would apprise the House on the issue.
