The Right to Privacy appears to be the next wave after the Right to Information Act. Government of India has constituted a group of officers under the Secretary, Department of Personnel and Training to develop a framework that could address the citizen’s interests and concerns on privacy, data protection and security.

Privacy as a concept is recognized by the Supreme Court as part the right to life and liberty guaranteed to a citizen under Article 21 of the Constitution.  The Supreme Court in its various judgments has observed that the said right cannot be curtailed “except according to procedure established by law”.

Also with the increased use of information technology government is collecting the personal information of individuals which can be misused if fallen into wrong hands. In order to protect the privacy of individuals the said data has to be protected and secured. Therefore there is a need for a comprehensive framework including legislation for data protection and privacy.

The group formed by the government has asked suggestions from the interested parties on the above  subject . The suggestions may be sent to K.G. Verma, Director, Department of Personnel 8 Training. North Block. New Delhi - 110001 [[email protected]].
