The Delhi High Court today issued notice to BJP MP Varun Gandhi on a petition filed by his uncle and Congress candidate from Pilibhit constituency V M Singh for allegedly making defamatory remarks against him during the last Lok Sabha elections.

Justice Aruna Suresh sought a response from Gandhi by July 30 in the matter.

In a petition filed by Singh through his counsel Arjun Harkauli, he alleged that Gandhi made remarks linking him to Pakistan's ISI and working for a separate state of Khalistan.

He also accused the politician of insulting farmers and Muslims during the election campaign.

The elections in Pilibhit constituency in Uttar Pradesh had witnesses a controversy following Gandhi's hate speeches.

He was arrested under the National Security Act.

The petitioner is a first cousin of Gandhi's mother and former Union Minister Maneka Gandhi.
