The underutilised Anand Vihar railway terminus may further be developed on the public private partnership (PPP) model.

The railways are considering engagaing private players for construction works to be carried out under the second phase at the terminus.

Facing a staff crunch due to stalled recruitments, railways hopes that private players will bring in the additional manpower.

Inadequate staff is one of the reasons for underutilisation of the terminus. At present staff strength at the station is too low to handle the world-class terminus.

“We will appoint a consultant based on whose reports decision will be taken to work on PPP model or not. Bid has already been invited,” said a railway officer.

This terminus spread over 6,000 sqm was built at a cost of Rs 240 cr. It was inaugurated last December to ease some of the pressure off the New Delhi station by shifting some trains here. But presently five trains per day on an average start from the station. The decision was taken to shift seven trains from busy New Delhi station to Anand Vihar after a stampede at the former but the terminus presently has the capacity for only three out of seven.
