The Gurgaon Police on Thursday said 88 workers have been arrested in relation to the violent incident at Maruti Suzuki India's Manesar plant, where one person was killed last evening.

"So far 88 workers have been arrested," DCP Maheshwar Dayal told reporters outside the plant here.

He further said a special investigation team (SIT) has been formed headed by Assistant Commissioner of Police Ravinder Tomar with six inspectors to probe the incident.

In order to maintain law and order at the plant, 1,200 policemen have been deployed in and around the area, he added.

Commenting on the number of injured in the violence yesterday, he said: "50 people were injured, including two foreigners who had minor injuries."

Dayal said the dead body, which was burnt beyond recognition has not be identified yet and efforts were on for its identification.

Haryana Director General of Police Ranjiv Singh Dalal, who also inspected the plant this afternoon said: "No justification of such violence can be given. We will soon arrest those who are behind the incident."

Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) said the Manesar plant has been shut down and no production would take place. The plant has an annual capacity of 5.5 lakh units and rolls out Swift, Dzire, SX4 and A-Star models.

Yesterday the company had said violence broke out in the evening when a worker beat up a supervisor on the shop floor.

However, the employees union said "objectionable remarks" by the supervisor against an employee triggered the violence.

Meanwhile in Chandigarh, Haryana Industry Minister Randeep Singh Sujewala told PTI that efforts are being made to arrest more people who were indulged in violence.

Stating that it was the state government's first priority to ensure restoration of complete law and order, the minister asserted that workers indulging in violence and destruction of property could not be justified no matter what amount of provocation was.

"No amount of provocation can justify workers' action," Sujewala said.

The minister, however, said the Labour Department would soon launch a reconciliation exercise between workers and management once the situation turns conducive for talks.

MSI in a statement last evening had said that 40 people were injured when workers at the plant "turned violent, attacking and injuring executives and managers in the office premises. The attackers also set fire to property and damaged facilities".

Labour unrest is not a new phenomenon in Manesar plant.

The factory had witnessed three such instances last year causing a total production loss of about 83,000 units resulting in a loss of about Rs 2,300 crore.

Back in 2000, Maruti had also witnessed violent labour unrest at its Gurgaon plant. During the three-month long stir the company had to deal with the deaths of two workers, albeit in different circumstances. The then management had maintained that the deaths were not related to the strike.
