Following IB warning, ISRO steps up security at Sriharikota facility

IB has warned of a possible attack by Pakistan-based terrorists

GN Bureau | August 27, 2013

Responding to a warning issued by the intelligence bureau (IB), security has been beefed up in and around the Indian space research organisation’s (ISRO) space launch facility in Sriharikota on Tuesday.

Based on inputs from IB warning of a possible threat from Pakistan-based terrorist groups, authorities at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre SHAR enhanced the security. A red alert has also been declared while additional groups of CISF personnel have been deployed along the coastline as a precautionary measure.

From time to time, intelligence agencies have been issuing warnings of possible attacks on the facility by terror groups operating within and outside the country.

The SHAR Centre, which is the only space launch facility of the country, is perennially kept under a multi-layered security net.

However, chinks in the security network have come to light in the past. A few years ago, an illegal immigrant from Bangladesh had managed to sneak into the heavily-guarded premises and this had sparked a nationwide uproar.
