HS Brahma is on foreign jaunt

Vice-president election schedule held up

GN Bureau | June 27, 2012

The schedule to conduct elections for vice-president is held up as the election commissioner HS Brahma is on a foreign jaunt. And the UPA2 is yet to appoint the third election commissioner. These are the two reasons for delay in announcing the poll schedule.

Brahma is likely to return to India on Friday and the first meeting between the officials and EC will be held on the day.

Sources say the Monsoon session is likely to be convened on July 30 and the new vice-president would be sworn in before August 10.

The electoral college for the vice-president is members of parliament of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. This will also be conducted with paper ballot. EC has appointed TK Viswanathan as returning officer for the election.
