The Congress has fully backed the government on its decision to raise the diesel price and ration LPG cylinders, but a demand has now come from within the party to revise the twin decisions, citing adverse implications in the elections.

The demand has come from the West Bengal Congress Committee, which decided to petition the party leadership to press for a rethink on the decisions, felt that the prices of petrol products did not go well with the people as shown from the Jangipur Lok Sabha by-election that its candidate Abhijeet Mukherjee could barely scrape through with a meagre 2500 votes.

The seat was won in 2009 by a margin of 1.28 lakh by his father Pranab Mukherjee, who vacated the seat after becoming the president, and such a slide-down is a clear indication that the government's decision of limiting the subsidised LPG cylinders and other economic decisions created an anger among the voters, the WPCC resolution said.

Its president Pradip Bhattacharya, a strong contender for the union ministerial berth vacated by Pranab Mukherjee, said: "We are still in the process of analysing the election results. But prima facie, most of the members were of the view that the rise in fertiliser, diesel and gas prices had its negative impact on the election results and so it would be worthwhile to reconsider the price mechanism."
