PMO meeting intelligence chiefs today

Role of IB, RAW being analysed, parliamentary control could be discussed

GN Bureau | February 14, 2013

The prime minister’s office (PMO) has called a meeting today of the heads of Intelligence Bureau (IB), Research & Analysis Wing (RAW) and Directorate of Military Intelligence with a view to take a consolidated policy about the role of such agencies. It may be recalled that a petition is before the supreme court on accountability of intelligence agencies.

With many scams brewing up and the UPA2 in a crisis mode, the role of intelligence agencies is crucial for the political leadership.

When VP Singh was prime minister in 1989, parliament passed a resolution that IB and RAW be made accountable to it. A joint parliamentary committee was set up with Jaswant Singh as chairman to bring intelligence agencies under parliament’s control. But the move has not taken off in two decades since.
