The Supreme Court has reopened investigations into the disproportionate assets case against BSP leader Mayawati.

The court while admitting a PIL, issued notice to the Centre and the CBI and Mayawati saying that it had never prohibited CBI from probing the DA against Mayawati in the past.

The CBI "is at liberty to probe the DA case and they can approach the government for this."

The bench said, "We never said that CBI has no power to investigate. It can do so, but has to get sanction from the state government."

As the news spread by the evening, it was music to the ears of the UPA government which has been struggling to garner numbers in the Lok Sabha. In fact, Mayawati who had called a rally at Lucknow on Tuesday was to announce her decision whether she would continue her support to the UPA or not. But the SC judgment had not come by then. Political observers say that she was left with no alternative but to defer her decision for a day. It was an unexpected decision for Mayawati and a political setback. Mayawati who had earlier celebrated the relief from SC a few months ago, did not comment on the SC decision.

A bench of justices P Sathasivam and Dipak Misra heard its July 6 verdict, quashing the DA case against Mayawati. The review petition has been filed by Uttar Pradesh native Kamlesh Verma who was represented by Shanti Bhushan and Kamini Jaiswal.

The apex court had said on July 6 that the DA case against Mayawati was "unwarranted" and the agency proceeded against her without properly understanding its orders which were confined to Taj Corridor case relating to the release of Rs 17 crore by UP government allegedly without sanction.
