Strengthening media will strengthen democracy: Roy

Emphasising that fearless journalism plays a very important role in touching lives of of people, Railway Minister Mukul Roy on Wednesday said strengthening the media will result in a strong democracy.

"Media is a fish that lives in the vast ocean of democracy. Hence, strengthening the media will result in strengthening of democracy," Roy said at the launch of a new Bengali daily 'Sambad Ekhon'.

He observed that after the Legislature, Judiciary and Executive, newspapers play the most important role in shaping society and felt that in this context journalism should be fearless.

"Newspapers have been very important in the political history of India. Right from the days of Independence struggle they have been crucial," Roy said.

State Tourism Minister Rachpal Singh said the media should educate people, dispel myths and disseminate truth.
