TRAI issues draft amendments to number portability

Invites suggestions from various stakeholder groups till April 2

GN Bureau | March 20, 2013

Are you a subscriber of a corporate mobile number and stuck with a service provider because your request for number porting was turned down on account of a “contractual obligation” with your company? Well, the telecom regulator seems to have arrived at a solution.

On Tuesday, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India came out with draft amendments to the Mobile Number Portability Regulations, 2009 for which it has invited suggestions from various stakeholder groups till April 2.

These regulations, issued in September 2009, aimed at providing a framework for effective implementation of mobile number portability across the country. However, porting requests of subscribers of corporate mobile numbers were being turned down by service providers as they were under “contractual obligations” with the corporates.

“The donor operators rejected such porting request for want of permission/authorisation from the companies/corporate for porting such numbers,” the regulator said in a statement.

The telecom regulator further said, “In order to address issues relating to processing of such porting requests, TRAI has issued draft Telecommunication Mobile Number Portability (Fifth Amendment) Regulations, 2009.”
