Unrelenting BJP calls meet to strategise action against PM

To take coalgate truth to people, go all out for Singh’s scalp

GN Bureau | August 22, 2012

After rocking both houses of parliament on Tuesday demanding prime minister Manmohan Singh’s resignation over the Comptroller and Auditor General’s report on coal blocks allocation, the Bharatiya Janata Party has called a parliamentary party meeting on Wednesday to decide on their further course of action.

A strongly worded draft resolution to be deliberated on in the meeting is expected to energise the party MPs to vigorously campaign against the prime minister and the Congress party not only inside parliament but also in their respective parliamentary constituencies.

The BJP which launched a diatribe against the PM forcing closure of both houses of parliament on Tuesday seems unrelenting and not in a mood to allow any business at least for the next two days until its march to parliament on Thursday.

Its chief spokesman, Ravi Shankar Prasad, said the party is firm on not allowing “this government of scams, scandals, corruption and loot” to continue any further.

Congress spokesperson Renuka Chaudhary, however, hit back, saying the party is not going to oblige the BJP demanding the PM's resignation, challenging it to come forward for discussion in parliament instead of misleading public on the issue of the CAG reports on coal blocks and Delhi airport deal. She also accused the CAG of going beyond its mandate to project assumed losses where no money was lost.

Prasad told a press conference later that the “coalgate” was a much wider scam than the 2G scam and it was regrettable that the prime minister, who allowed it as the coal minister for five years, was not even prepared for a probe. He said it was even more shocking that the government and Congress were “humiliating” the CAG for exposing their scandals.

Prasad also tried to refute the Congress allegation of similar irregularities in the coal mining licences given during the BJP-led NDA regime. “Seventy coal blocks were released for captive use between 1993 and 2005 and only 33 of them were allotted by the NDA while the UPA allotted as many as 146 in just four years,” he pointed out.
