UPA2 decides against creation of Telangana

No formal announcement to be made to avoid violence
GN Bureau | New Delhi | July 12 2012

The Congress leadership is understood to have taken a firm decision against creation of a separate state of Telangana, after weighing all political implications, though no formal announcement will be made to avoid fresh violent turmoil in Andhra Pradesh.

Party sources said Sonia Gandhi took the decision after consulting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the party leaders from Andhra Pradesh on a report on the ground realities she got from Minister for Overseas Indians Vayalar Ravi.

Home Minister P Chidambaram will be convening a meeting of leaders of all parties in Andhra Pradesh next month during the parliament session after the vice-president's election is over on August 7 to discuss the report of the justice Srikrishna commission on the issue.
