Is Delhi Metro to be blamed for safety hazards?

GN Bureau | February 2, 2012

People getting stuck in the Delhi Metro doors is common these days. A series of such incidents has intilled fear among commuters, tarnishing Metro's spotless image of being the safest mode of travel in the national capital. While the incidents -- when the door sensors failed and a few passengers had harrowing time getting stuck -- might seem plain technical snags, we should also consider reasons behind such incidents. Till a few years ago, people were going gaga over Metro and its marvels. It did not cover much of the city then. Hence, limited people and a refreshing ride sans snags. But today Metro covers most parts of the capital and the NCR. Most stations are overcrowded and despite continuous warnings people remain insouciant. And the moment the train arrives, the unruly crowd jostles its way inside the coach and outside. Chances of an accident double up in such a situation.

So, is it right for us to blame the DMRC for such accidents or a bit of discipline and patience can save us from such incidents? Or the authorities should shift their focus to tame the unruly crowd?
