After putting it through extensive trials, Railways have decided to introduce the much-talked about anti-collision device (ACD) technology in Southern Railway network from November 10.

The clamour for introducing ACD technology by Railways had become shriller after a spate of recent train accidents in in the country recent months which claimed hundreds of lives.

The technology, first deployed in Konkan railway section, was subsequently commissioned in Northeast Frontier Railway in 2007. Both are mostly single line sections.

Last month, ACD was put to extensive trails in Southern Railway in multiple line sections after being suitably modified by Konkan Railway Corporation Limited, which developed the technology.

"The tests were successful and after some modification we have decided to introduce it in Southern Railway from November 10," Railway officials said adding, the technology will also be introduced in South Western Railway and South Central Railway.

The ACD technology is capable of preventing head-on and rear-end collisions in mid-sections by alerting the train driver about movement of trains in close vicinity.

Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee had last week said the government has undertaken steps for installing ACD and other technologies like train protection warning system (TPWS) and SIMRAN (satellite imaging rail navigation system) within six months to one year to prevent train accidents.
