BJP questions putting intelligence inputs into NATGRID

The idea of putting all the intelligence into one grid to make it available for all police and other agencies may have serious consequences: Jaitely

BJP today questioned the government's decision to put all intelligence inputs into the proposed National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID) claiming it may have serious consequences and took a pot shot at Home Minister P Chidambaram saying he believes there is no one as "wise" as him.

Senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley said the idea of putting all the intelligence into one grid to make it available for all police and other agencies may have serious consequences.

"The cabinet has given its approval for it (NATGRID). No official can say anything against in front of him as he (Chidambaram) thinks no one in the world is as intelligent as him," Jaitley said addressing a party function.

Jaitley said "putting generic" intelligence into the grid may not be harmful but wondered what would be the benefit of putting actionable intelligence into it as the information will be accessible to everybody -- from various state police to other agencies.

"As per the proposal, all the intelligence agencies will put their information into the grid so that it can be accessed by CBI, revenue intelligence as well as all police forces.

"Suppose you get information that Osama (Bin Laden) was hiding in Abbotabad. Will you put into the grid so that everybody gets to know about it? No intelligence agency would like to share actionable information. Has the government thought over the issue"? he said.
