Electronic passenger info system in Delhi bus stops by Dec

PIS, similar to information system of Delhi Metro, will enable the commuter to know about the schedule of DTC buses

In two months time, over 100 bus stops in the city will have an electronic passenger information system which will enable commuters to know about the arrival time of DTC buses and schedules for various destinations.

The Delhi Transport Corporation, which runs the world's largest fleet of environment friendly CNG buses, will introduce the system in collaboration with Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System, a government entity set up to suggest improvements in transport infrastructure.

Senior DTC officials said in the first phase the passenger information system will be introduced in a little over 100 bus stops and by the middle of next year all the bus stops will have the system. Delhi has around 2,500 DTC bus stops.

"The PIS is being introduced to inform the commuters about the timings and routes of the approaching buses," Transport Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely said.

Officials said the system will be almost similar to the electronic passenger information system in Delhi Metro.

The DTC has already set up a state-of-the-art communications centre at Kashmiri Gate to operate the PIS.

The officials said the DTC will also implement its long pending plan to provide hand-held electronic ticket machines to conductors soon. .

In an effort to further streamline the operations, the DTC has also started a process to further rationalise the bus routes.

Currently, DTC operates on 657 bus routes which were finalised almost 15 years back and the DTC wanted to rationalise the routes to reflect the "changed transport" scenario in the city.

The DTC official said rationalisation of the existing routes was felt necessary as the ambitious cluster bus service has already been introduced in various routes. The cluster bus service is run by private entities.

The officials said DTC will keep introducing passenger friendly measures in the coming days as its financial health has improved significantly after induction of the low floor buses last year.

They said the daily average revenue collection has increased to Rs 3.5 crore against Rs 75 lakh a few months back.

Currently, DTC operates around 6,500 buses including around 4,000 low floor buses in the city.
