Maharashtra Director General of Police D Sivanandan today said that the quality of police force should be improved rather than increasing their quantity.

"I want to upgrade the image of the Maharashtra police force. It is not the quantity alone but the quality which also matters while expecting better output from the police," Sivanandan told reporters here after inaugurating the three-day Cyber Safe Thane-2010 event organised by the Thane police to make citizens aware of various crimes arising in Cyber world.

Two things that are needed to get better output from police force was giving best of education to them or family members or taking care of their health, he said.

Lauding the police's work in the district, Sivanandan said that "this initiative by the police will go a long way in making Thane a safe place."

On cyber crime, the DGP said, "Cyber crimes were not confined to fraud or net, credit card or others but has gone a long way and covered a wide area which could cause much more damage."

Sivanandan also said that the policemen in the state need to be equipped with latest equipments to carry out investigations and to prevent crimes.

When asked about the recent rape case in which a senior police officer was allegedly involved, the DGP said what the police officer had done was definitely wrong. "Action would be taken against him as it has brought a shame to the police force," he added.
