Woman deposited Rs 7 lakh in response to jackpot e-mail

Five persons including a Nigerian were arrested today for duping a women here of over Rs 7 lakh through an e-mail, police said.

"A woman had deposited Rs 7 lakh in response to an e-mail stating that she has been chosen for a jackpot of USD 7.5 million," said IG Police Dadra Nagar Haveli Mukesh Chandra.

When even after depositing the amount she did not receive the jackpot money, she filed a police complaint, he said.

"After depositing the initial money she kept getting phone calls, and SMS to deposit more money as taxes and fees to avail the jackpot," Chandra said.

Acting on her complaint, police began investigations and conducted raids in Mumbai.

"Following which five persons including a Nigerian William Simon, and a woman were arrested from Worli in Mumbai by the police party," Chandra said.

"One of the gang members during interrogation said they used to get seven per cent commission by the Nigerian on amount being deposited in the account," he said.
