"It may be to open an account, make a cash deposit or a withdrawal ... We will use the UIDAI number along with the customer's thumb impression (for offering this service)," NPCI Chief Operating Officer M Balakrishnan told reporters today.

The 10 banks that promote NPCI are State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, Canara Bank, Bank of Baroda, Union bank of India, Bank of India, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Citibank and HSBC.

Asked when the project would be implemented, he said, "We are doing a pilot study in Jharkhand. Maybe after some time we will be able to inform you".

Besides, he said the NPCI are working on offering "cheque truncation" services to be launched in few months' time, which would enable paperless transaction.

Balakrishnan and senior officials were here to announce their association with Karur-based Lakshmi Vilas Bank to offer Interbank Mobile Payment Service for its customers.
