Police crack down on 770 online sex sites in South Korea

Directs communications authority to shut down sites

Yonhap | February 9, 2011

South Korean police have cracked down on 770 websites and blogs selling prostitution while booking thousands for their alleged involvement in sex trafficking, officials said.

After wrapping up a six-week nationwide bust, the National Police Agency (NPA) said yesterday it booked 2,271 people without physical detention and put six under arrest on charges of illegally selling or buying sex.

Of them, 1,316 had off-line deals, 633 used online sites and 290 put up advertisements for sex services, the NPA said.

There were 252 violators who engaged in teenage sex trafficking, with 164 buyers, 36 brokers and 52 minors, the agency said, noting that over 95 percent of the sex trades were made through online sites, such as online chatting communities, dating sites and personal blogs.

Police have requested the state communications authority to shut down the sex sites.
