Railways to give SMS update of reservation status

Service charge on e-ticket reduced

Railways will be introducing SMS updates of reservation status and movements of wagons to freight customers; this was announced by Mamata Banerjee, minister for railways while presenting the railway budget for the year 2010-11 in the Lok Sabha today.

The minister also announced the lowering of service charges on e-ticket to Rs 20 for AC classes and Rs 10 for sleeper classes.

The budget had a strong technology push with a center for railway research being planned at IIT-Kharagpur and announcement of introduction of GPS based driver guidance system. Railways also announced plans for research partnerships with other premier institutes like IITs, NITs, CSIR and DRDO.
