Raja to act tough against unsolicited calls

Unsolicited call to finance minister wakes up IT & C minister

PTI | August 9, 2010

With no less than finance minister Pranab Mukherjee getting unsolicited calls on his mobile, the communications ministry has decided to act tough and involve the regulator Trai to curb the nuisance.

Communications and information technology minister A Raja today said the ministry has involved the Trai to keep a tab on telemarketing calls.

Replying to a question on why the Telecom Regulatory Authority did not maintain a 'do not call' registry, the minister said, "that is the reason we have involved Trai in the system. I referred the matter to the IT and communications secretary in consultation with Trai."

"There has to be strict and stable monitoring system to avoid these type of calls and messages. Appropriate action will be taken to avoid unsolicited messages," he added.
