The Maharashtra state government on a directive from Centre has said that only government employees will be able to verify an applicant's details used to issue an Aadhar card. This is likely to slow the process of issuance of these cards.

Until March 2011, the verification process was carried out by the government staff. Due to an increase in the workload and mismanagement in the system, the private players were also roped in to help with the verification.

In case the existing staff is not able to meet the demand, the district administrations are required to call for retired government staffers to verify the details, as reported by Times of India.

The paper further quoted the official saying the central government observed that the centre owners and their staff were not closely scrutinising the documents and were more interested in volumes. As a result many persons, having submitted incorrect information, got UID cards. This led to the Centre cancelling the March decision.

The process is likely to slow because a large number of employees will be sent on election duty for municipal corporation and zilla parishad. There won't be spare staff for UID work and the issuance of cards will get stuck.
