Cabinet secretary Chandrasekhar gets another one-yr extension

Second extension for Chandrasekhar ends the race between 1972 and 1973 batch top bureaucrats for position

Government today gave another one year extension to Cabinet Secretary K M Chadrasekhar effective from June.

"Cabinet secretary K M Chadrasekhar has been give an extension beginning June 13, 2010 for one year or until further orders, whichever is earlier," a PMO spokesperson said.

The order giving extension to Chandrasekhar was expected as papers in this regard had been moved to competent authorities for approval last week.

This extension ends the race among 1972 and 1973 batch IAS officers for the top bureaucratic post of the country.

Three bureaucrats - 1972-batch Kerala cadre officer M Ramachandran handling charge of urban development secretary, 1973-batch Gujarat cadre IAS officer Ashok Chawla who is secretary finance and 1973-batch Kerala cadre IAS officer P J Thomas who is secretary, telecommunication - were in contention for the post, sources said.

Ramachandran will be retiring from service next month while Chawla and Thomas will be retiring in January 2011.

62-year-old Chandrasekhar is a 1970-batch Kerala cadre IAS officer who assumed charge in 2007 for a term of two years. He was given a one-year extension in June last year.
