The central bureau of investigation has registered three cases of corruption against the chairman and managing director of the Singrauli unit of the Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL) and to deputy chief engineers at the company's Amlohri and Jayant projects.

Other officials of the three projects and the proprietor of a Singrauli-based private firm have also been named.

The accused officials had received kickbacks for not taking action against suppliers of mining equipment who had delivered machines of inferior quality. The company incurred huge production losses because of the malfunctioning machines besides the monetary loss in the purchase.

The investigating agency raided the residential and official premises of the accused at 22 places in Singrauli (Madhya Pradesh), Patna, Varanasi, New Delhi and Kolkata. The raids at the NCL CMD's home yielded Rs 1 lakh in cash, fixed deposits of Rs 80 lakh and some incriminating documents.
