In its bid to give a thrust to Make in India programme, Steel Authority of India Ltd’s (SAIL) Durgapur Steel Plant dispatched the first consignment of metro coach wheels to Kolkata Metro.

Earlier, the wheels for Kolkata metro rail were being imported. SAIL said that it is an important step towards import substitution and in the true spirit of making in India SAIL envisages developing new products to suit the country’s need.

The Durgapur steel plant(DSP) has built the carriage wheels on its own. The design of Kolkata metro wheel is critical due to its complex web profile, which is different from the existing products that are supplied by DSP. The dimensions of these wheels are also different from the existing wheels. These required new manufacturing processes.
