GN Bureau | August 29, 2013

Top-level executives of PSEs, who hold or are likely to take charge as CEOs or directors, are undergoing training to meet the transformation challenges to steer their organisations in the globally competitive environment.

Under a seven-day advanced global leadership held at the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta (IIM-C), organised jointly by SCOPE (the apex body of public sector enterprises, or PSEs) and IIM-C, the senior executives are being trained to take up possible challenges as they move from their current role to board-level responsibilities in near future, according to a release issued by the organisers.

Sougata Ray, programme director and professor of strategic management at IIM-C, emphasised the contribution of central public sector undertakings in India’s economic development. He also stressed that executives need to be inspirational in shaping policies and administrative decisions of the government.

R Gopalan, member of the public enterprises selection board (PESB), emphasised the need for acquiring knowledge and competencies which are of critical importance for leadership positions in CPSEs. He urged the participants to be conscious of social needs, being inclusive in company agenda, and behaving ethically with perseverance.

IIM-C director Saibal Chattopadhyay expressed his optimism that the programme would be a flagship executive education programme in India over the years and would make significant contributions in nurturing high-level leadership in CPSEs.

The programme is being held in two phases. The first phase, which began from August 26, is a seven-day programme at IIM-C. In the second phase, a one-day programme would be organised in the national capital on September 6.
