Bar IT from tapping phones: panel to PM

Cabinet secretary-led panel advises withdrawing income tax department's authorisation to request wiretaps

GN Bureau | March 3, 2011

A committee led by the cabinet secretary has recommended that the central board of direct taxes (CBDT) be barred from requesting wiretaps, according to a report in the Indian Express.

The panel's advice comes in the backdrop of leaked conversations of corporate lobbysist Niira Radia which blew the lid off the corporate-politico nexus. The recommendation, amongst others, is in keeping with prime minister Manmohan Singh's assurances to the corporate world of tighter laws for phone-tapping.

The recommendations, now awaiting the prime minister's approval, have been made after consultations of the cabinet secretary with the secretaries of home and legal affairs ministry as well as those of the department of telecommunication and revenue department of the finance ministry.
