Bombay HC wants cooperative societies under RTI

Cites the increasing number of scams in cooperative societies

The Bombay high court has recommended central government to bring cooperative societies under the ambit of the RTI act.

Division bench of Justices J P Deodhar and A B Chaudhary observed this while hearing a plea asking to cover Agricultural Market Produce Committees (AMPC) under the RTI act.

Vidarbha AMPC had appealed against the ruling of the single bench of high court directed it to reveal information under RTI act.

“Before parting with the judgment, looking at the increase in number of scams in the co-operative credit societies and banks due to frauds by the persons within the society or the bank causing severe losses to the poor depositors...it would be far better to cover all the co-operative credit societies/banks etc. under the RTI Act," the court noted,” said the ruling.
