The government is holding a high level meeting on Tuesday to decide on the contours of the Rs 7277 crore Bundelkhand package approved last November.

The meeting, that would include officials from the prime minister’s office, rural development ministry and representatives from the Bundelkhand region, is expected to deliberate on the effective monitoring of the package.

The package aimed at the integrated development of the drought hit Bundelkhand region in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh is said to have been personally pushed by the Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi.

“The agenda of the meeting on Thursday is to flesh out a proper mechanism to utilise the money on the development of the region and ensure the state machinery is co-opted into the implementation of the schemes under the package,” said an official in the rural development ministry.

The package covers seven districts of Uttar Pradesh (Banda, Chitrakoot, Hamirpur, Jalaun, Jhansi, lalipur and Mahoba) and six districts of Madhya Pradesh (Chatrapur, Damoh, Datia, Panna, Sagar and Tikamgarh)

The plan proposed under the package is estimated to cost Rs 7266 crore spread over three years.

The cost, in some parts, will be met by convergence of sundry central government plans along with the ones of the rural development ministry.

A pilot project showcasing the convergence programme has already been launched in 13 districts of Bundelkhand.
