A case has been registered against a Congress candidate for allegedly violating Model Code of Conduct by distributing booze to lure voters, a senior police official said on friday.

Congress candidate from Jalandhar Central, Rajinder Beri was booked under Section 171 of IPC after a private news channel's sting operation showed liquor being distributed to voters through slips issued by Beri's office, ADCP (Headquarters) Navjot Singh Mahal said.

"A case has been registered against Beri after it came to know from the string operation that shop owner gave the liquor bottles to (undercover reporter) customer according to the slip," Mahal said.

Central Returning Officer Iqbal Singh Sandhu said the case was registered the previous night after the sting operation was shown on the channel in evening hours.

Further investigations are on, the ADCP added.
