Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's announcement of erecting the world's tallest statue has run into trouble as Opposition Congress has complained to the Election Commission, dubbing it a breach of poll code.

Modi, in turn, attacked the Congress for their complaint, saying this is an "insult" of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, whose statue the BJP Government wants to erect.

Congress, in a letter to State Election Commissioner K C Kapoor today, said the announcement just ahead of polling to the six municipal corporations was a breach of election code of conduct.

Gujarat Congress President Siddharth Patel said, "the BJP, by using the name of Sardar Patel, wants to garner votes.

This announcement could have been made after the polls."

The Congress has sought action against Modi.

Modi, addressing an election rally here, slammed the Congress. "When I am trying to honour Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the Congress is creating roadblocks in it. For the Congress leaders there is only one family and no other leader of their party exists for them."

"Is this not an insult of Sardar Patel?" he asked the crowd, and replied himself that it is a "big insult" of the great leader.

Modi had yesterday announced erection of 182 feet tall statue of Sardar Patel called 'Statue of Unity' at Sadhu Bet, an island on River Narmada, which will be double the height of 'Statue of Liberty'.

In Vadodara, AICC Secretary P Sudhakar Reddy also criticised Modi for "using the name" of Sardar Patel to get votes in civic polls.

Talking to PTI, he sought to know why the BJP leader made the announcement on the eve of civic polls slated on October 10.

"It is the habit of Modi to remember Sardar Patel only during elections," he charged.

Reddy asked Modi to build statues of Mahatma Gandhi, B R Ambedkar and former President A P J Abdul Kalam.
