The special court hearing the 2002 Gulburg Society riot case today asked civil society group and media to help it find the truth by putting forward their views on various aspects of the case.

Designated Judge B U Joshi while passing the order observed that "since the case was linked with national unity, it was necessary not to keep the scope of representation on various aspects of the case limited."

For justice and proper decision in the case it was needed to take into consideration representation on various aspects of the case and by all organisations whose role have been discussed during the trial, it further observed.

The court felt there should be direct representation by the NGO Citizen for Justice and Peace (CJP) working for some of the riot victims and by media.

It has asked the media to place its view before the court with regard to the investigation in the case, the phone call records, orders passed by the Apex court with regard to the case and sting operation on some of the accused by a private television channel.

It would help the court in the search for truth if the media made its representation through its lawyer, the court said in its order.

Sixty nine persons including ex-MP Ehsan Jaffery were killed during the riot in Gulburg society in 2002.

Further hearing on the order passed by the court today is scheduled for December 13.

The trial in the Gulburg case was nearing completion with cross examination of 338 witnesses and 587 documentary evidence.

During the course of trial some of the witnesses have alleged that the judge Joshi was biased against them and have demanded his removal, which was rejected by the higher courts.

Two public prosecutors in the case had also resigned during the course of trial, following which new public prosecutors were appointed.

The trial is being conducted against 66 accused who have been booked for murder, rioting, inciting mob, destruction of property, and under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
