Delhi state assembly deputy speaker Amrish Gautam on Tuesday earned the Delhi high court’s (HC) wrath for unauthorised construction at his home in Khichripur area of the city.

Gautam had approached the HC to get a May 30 Lokayukta order for a probe into the illegal construction quashed on the ground that he enjoyed immunity being the deputy speaker.

"If you yourself admit that there is some unauthorised construction then why don't you demolish the illegal part ?” asked justice Hima Kohli. Or else, “Why don’t you get a clearance from the civic agency (municipal corporation of Delhi)?” she further pulled up Gautam’s counsel.

Lokayukta Justice Manmohan Sarin's order had come on allegations made by a MCD (municipal corporation of Delhi) councillor Preeti Behn. Gautam has been claiming that the anti-corruption watchdog does not have the jurisdiction to probe allegations against him. Behn had approached the  Lokayukta for a probe into 109 square metres of unauthorised construction at Gautam’s property.

Justice Kohli has sought a response from the deputy speaker to be filed by July 22.
