EC to hear 'paid news' charges on Maha CM on July 9

EC notice issued earlier on ads that were passed off as news

The Election Commission has postponed to July 9 the hearing in a complaint concerning 'paid news', allegedly involving Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan.

The hearing, which was earlier scheduled for tomorrow, has been deferred following a request from Chavan, EC sources said today.

The sources said Chavan could himself appear or send his lawyer.

The Commission had served a notice to the chief minister on allegations of placing advertisements that were passed off as news items during the assembly polls last year.

EC had also sent to Chavan copies of allegations including several CDs and press clippings that BJP had given in its complaint to the Commission. BJP had alleged that Chavan had overspent in his election campaign and misrepresented facts about the expenses.
