The reason for the success of the bus rapid transit (BRT) corridor in Ahmedabad is the connectivity from the nearby societies to the bus stop, I P Gautam, municipal commissioner of Ahmedabad said on Saturday.

He said that there is a provision of feeder services being provided. “Unless you give destination in public transport or BRT, it won’t work,” Gautam said while speaking at a conference on urban mobility in New Delhi. 

The municipal commissioner said that using para transit properly was the key for getting people to use public transport. Talking about issue of clash of interest of public transport like auto rickshaws and buses, he said that there is a need to integrate different modes of public transport.

Gautam said that the different modes should not be competing against each other. “We have provided a place for parking of auto rickshaws on the BRT. Around 65, 000 rickshaws will act as feeder for the BRT and the other transit corridors,” he added.

He said that the state’s transport system, once ready, was geared to deal with the city’s projected population of eight million by 2020. Apart from BRT and MRTs, a city metro and monorail are also expected to be a part of the transport system in Ahmedabad.
