As part of efforts to provide affordable treatment for diabetes, the Delhi government today launched a screening-cum-counselling centre related to the disease affecting nearly 25 lakh people in the city.

The centre at the GTB hospital was inaugurated by chief minister Sheila Dikshit who said it will help in creating awareness about the disease.

"This centre will work towards creating awareness among people about diabetes and will further help those who are suffering from the disease," she said.

Delhi Health Minister Kiran Walia said the Centre was part of Government's effort to offer better treatment to diabetes patients.

There are 25 such screening and counselling centres in various hospitals of the city.

According to a latest study, every fourth person in Delhi either suffers from diabetes or is susceptible to it with the disease more common among the urban population than their rural counterparts.
